Preparing for the introduction of Police and Crime Commissioners is a challenge. There is limited time to put work in place to ensure a smooth transition.
As such, a joint Police Authority and Force Transition Board has been created, under the leadership of Director of Joint Legal Services, Mr Gareth Madge (Chair) and Interim Chief Executive of the Police Authority, Mr Cerith Thomas (Vice-Chair).
A number of other representatives from across the force and authority sit on the Board, and lead on specific projects, including elections, staff and communications.
The Board meets monthly, with a project team meeting weekly to ensure the day to day tactical delivery of the project.
The terms of reference for the Board can be found below.
Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) recently carried out a review to check on the preparations for Police and Crime Commissioners.
The full results, both for South Wales and nationally, are in the documents below.
In summary:
“South Wales Police Authority has already put in place comprehensive plans for managing the handover to PCCs. These include substantial work and communication with the public, partners and the Welsh Government to ensure the policing issues that affect Wales are taken into account.
“The police authority remains fully committed to ensuring that a business as usual approach is taken.”
