Police Authority to Decide on Council Tax

South Wales Police Authority will decide the total increase to the police element of council tax for 2012-13 during its meeting on Monday, 13 February at 10am, Police Headquarters, Bridgend.

The Police Authority and Force are already facing a tough financial situation, because of funding cuts by Central Government.  The Authority will hear from the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Constable as to how much money is needed to help bridge the gap.

Chair of the Police Authority, Councillor Russell Roberts, said: “This meeting is of critical importance to the Police Authority, and the people of South Wales who we represent.  We will be setting the police element of the council tax for the coming year, which is always a difficult decision.

“This year, however, its difficulty has been increased because of the situation we find ourselves in, because of the funding cuts imposed by Central Government.  We have made tough decisions over the last 12 months to help make savings within the organisation, and this is no exception.

“Any increase in council tax will be difficult for the public of South Wales, and we realise this.  This is a tough time financially for all of us.  As Authority Members, we have the difficult job of balancing the need to keep council tax low, with the need to provide effective policing for South Wales.”

The Police Authority is responsible for the policing budget.  The current budget is £276.2million, with 80% of this being spent on staff.  The current amount council tax payers in South Wales contribute towards policing is £161.35 (based on a Band D household).

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of the Authority.  Should you wish to ask a question, visit the website for more information on www.southwalespoliceauthority.org.uk, or call the authority on 01656 869366.
