Good Performance Impresses Police Authority

Confidence in the police has increased by nearly 8% in just six months, and around 1,000 less crimes are taking place each month, South Wales Police Authority will be told at its next meeting.

The meeting, which will take place on Monday 15 February at 10am at Police Headquarters, Bridgend, will hear about the excellent performance results from South Wales Police.

These results include the big increase in confidence in the police – which has risen from 39% in March 2009 to 46.9% in September 2009.

Chair of the Police Authority’s Performance Monitoring Group, Mr Mike Lewis, said: “Improving public confidence in the Police is of critical importance to us, as it is now the single national figure used to measure performance nationally.  The improvements we have seen are excellent, and testament to the work carried out by all our officers and staff.  Although we are on the right road, further improvement can be made, and the Police Authority will be pushing for this to continue in the year and beyond.”

As well as the confidence figures, Members will be informed of the overall cut in crime between April 2009 and January 2010, which has fallen by 11,656 crimes (11.8%) – that equates to a 32 less victims of crime every day.

Mr Lewis said: “The performance figures are excellent.  There have been nearly 12,000 less crimes between April and January, which is great news for everyone in South Wales.  What is particularly pleasing is the big drop in burglaries, which has fallen by 17%, meaning 841 less victims.  As a Police Authority Member, I am proud of the work of all our officers and staff in achieving these great results.  However, we cannot be complacent.  We must ensure that these results carry on in the future.”

Other results are that autocrime, including thefts of and from cars, has fallen by 23.5% - or 3,440 crimes, and serious sexual offences have dropped from 631 to 484 – a drop of 23%.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, and are able to ask a question.  To find out more information on this, visit the website at www.southwalespoliceauthority.org.uk or contact the Authority directly on 01656 869366.
