Protective Services Policy
Protective Services is defined by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) and the National Police Improvement Agency (NPIA) as:

Counter terrorism

Domestic extremism

Serious and organised crime, including cross-border crime

Civil contingencies

Critical incident management

Major crime

Public order

Strategic roads policing

Protecting Vulnerable People (Public Protection)

The Police Authority has a duty to monitor and scrutinise the Force in the area of Protective Services, which is also sometimes referred to as ‘Level 2 Policing’.
The aims of this policy include:

Establishing the accountability arrangements for Protective Services at local and regional levels.

Identifying the appropriate minimum standards within each policing area, and how each is to be monitored and measured.

Identifying the structure through which the Force will report to the Authority and to the Police Authorities of Wales (PAW), and the relevant timetable.

Evidencing the Authority’s governance and scrutiny over the Force in the policing areas defined within the policy
