Cardiff and Overall Winner - June Johnson
June Johnson has been at the forefront of developing an action plan to deal with anti social behaviour on the Bayside Estate, through her role on the Resident’s Association.
During the summer of 2004 the estate was experiencing troubles with anti social behaviour, gangs of youths were congregating on the estate, stolen vehicles were being driven around the area and numerous calls recording vandalism and damage were received by the police.
This problem escalated and due to June’s involvement and tenacity she worked with the police and housing authority to stop the troubles.
With her as a leader other people have followed suit and the balance of power has shifted from the yobs to the community. She has made all those around her believe in the community and the need for continued work.
Bridgend Winner - Mark Thomas
Mark Thomas on a weekly basis voluntarily trains up to 200 boys and girls to play rugby.
As well as this, Mark arranges a young person’s disco in a local night-club, catering for people up to the age of 16. They take place at least 10 times per year, attracting up to 1300 boys and girls at any one time.
This event gives these young people an activity that removes them from the street and fills their time with an enjoyable activity.
Merthyr Tydfil Winner - Paul Marshallsea
Paul Marshallsea is an active leader of the Dowlais & Pant boys and girls club, which is massively attended venue for local youths, which cuts down on the nuisance of youth annoyance by child participation within the community.
Paul is a committed, enthusiastic “community player”. He runs project after project, many consecutively and is tireless in his quest to improve the facilities for the people of Pant & Dowlais and to improve the quality of life of young and old in the area.
Without Paul there would be few if any community facilities for the youth of the area, he is passionate about the community and is at the heart of everything that happens.
Neath Port Talbot Winner - Brian John
Brian John has been Chairman of the Afan Tawe Nedd Neighbourhood Watch Association since its inception in 1996.
With the Association he has introduced a number of projects that have improved the quality of life of the vulnerable in the borough, including Data Link.
With Data Link, medical details of a person or the family is placed in a container and held in that person’s fridge. Paramedics then use the details should they be called, saving time in administering necessary aid to the patient.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Winners - Ron Bundock & Dan Callan
Ron Bundock is the Chair and Dan Callan the Treasurer of the Rhondda Crime Reduction Panel. Both retire this year and have given a lot of invaluable time, commitment and energy working closely with the police in making the Rhondda a safer place to live and work.
Ron, a member of the panel since 1989, is community minded to his very core. Dan, a very young 83 year old, has been a member of the panel since 1995 and is always willing to help locally in whatever way he can.
It is because of their commitment to the panel and the work they do in support of them, that has secured funding that has seen approximately two thousand homes in the Rhondda made safer.
Swansea Winner - Ann Jones
Ann Jones runs a youth club in Graigfelen for children aged between 8 and 14 years. She ensures the children are occupied with constructive tasks, ensuring the attendees are not causing anti social behaviour problems in their area.
As a consequence of her work, she has helped alleviate instances of anti social behaviour within Graigfelen.
Her enthusiasm and commitment are an asset to the community who in turn will reap the benefits of her hard work.
Vale of Glamorgan Winner - John Walker
John Walker is the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator for Dinas Powys. He is also the Chair of the Vale and South Wales Neighbourhood Watch Groups. As Chair of the Vale Group, John deals with issues throughout the division.
All of the work that John does is in his own time. He sits on community based panels which affect his local area, as well as those affecting the division as a whole.
