We are delighted to introduce the first Equality & Human Rights Scheme of the Police Authority. This is a single scheme which combines our equality commitments for all equality strands and we believe it demonstrates our commitment to tacking inequality for everyone.
We have moved forward significantly with equality and diversity since our Race, Gender and Disability Equality Schemes were introduced and equality has become a key priority in terms of the way we do our work. However we know that inequality, discrimination and disadvantage still exist among communities and individuals in South Wales and that many people can feel excluded from or fearful of police services. Furthermore, we are aware that age, sexual orientation, transgender and religion are issues that can lead to inequality and we want to ensure that we have a scheme which encompasses these equality strands.
The actions in the 3-year scheme have been drawn up following a number of consultation and involvement processes with members of the public and internal force employees. We believe that the actions are realistic goals to help us to improve in the key areas where we know we need to deliver.
There is no doubt that the profile of equality has been raised within the police service and police authorities, but there is clearly more work to do. We will personally ensure that the aims of the scheme are achieved and we know that all Members and Officers of the Authority will work with us in this.
