Ethical Standards

South Wales Police Authority prides itself on upholding the highest ethical standards in all its practices and work.
 
Our Members, Staff and Volunteers are committed to working within agreed guidelines and to a Code of Conduct.
 

Members

 
As representatives of the local community, Members of the Police Authority sign up to a Code of Conduct. This includes details of the ten principles of conduct:

  • Honesty and Integrity
  • Objectivity
  • Accountability
  • Openness
  • Personal Judgement
  • Respect for Others
  • Duty to Uphold the Law
  • Stewardship
  • Leadership

Staff

 
While staff members of the Police Authority are not representatives of the community, there is still a level of conduct which is expected.
 
The Police Staff Council has adopted a Standards of Professional Behaviour document, which sets out the expectations that the service and the public have in the behaviour of staff. This includes:
  • Honesty and integrity
  • Authority, Respect and Courtesy
  • Equality and diversity
  • Use of restraint
  • Instructions
  • Work and responsibilities
  • Confidentiality
  • Fitness for work
  • Discreditable conduct
  • Challenging and reporting improper conduct

Volunteers


Each of our volunteers in the Independent Custody Visiting Scheme must sign up to a Code of Conduct prior to their appointment.  This sets out what is expected of them in their duties, along with what constitutes in appropriate conduct.
