Protective Services

Protective Services

A key priority for the police service is to ensure that it deals effectively with terrorism, serious crime and other major challenges to public safety. These are often described as ‘Protective Services’.

Protective services includes:
  • counter-terrorism and domestic extremism,
  • major crime, such as murder
  • protecting vulnerable people
  • serious organised and cross-border crime,
  • civil contingencies and emergency planning,
  • critical incident management,
  • public order, and
  • strategic roads policing.

The Authority, through the Protective Services Group, monitors the work of South Wales Police in each of these areas.

PREVENT Strategy

One of the elements of protective services is counter-terrorism and domestic extremism. The Government has launched a PREVENT strategy, which focuses on working with individuals and communities who are vulnerable to the threat of violent extremism.

It aims to help build resilience and resistance to the threat and to reduce inequalities, tackle racism and other forms of extremism.
